Vince – A Stylish GTK Theme for Linux

Vince is a beautiful modern GTK theme and it is compatible with all GTK3 and GTK2-based Desktop Environments including Xfce, Mate, Gnome, etc.

It has 3 colour variants which are Materia, Materia-dark, and Materia-light and they all feature a minimalist UI with clean design elements and neat animation effects.

It is based on the nana-4 Material Design theme (formerly Flat-Plat) which is based on GNOME’s Adwaita theme.

This is not the first time a theme is what can be referred to as the 3rd-generation fork from another theme. Sometimes the “generation” count goes as high as 6. But this is open-source so more power to the developer.

Ultimately, using Vince will mean subscribing to Google’s Material Design theme specifications and I’m fine with that.

Features in Vince

  • Free and open-source. Source code available on GitHub.
  • Clean design elements.
  • Interesting UX animation effects.
  • 3 style variants: Materia, Materia-dark, and Materia-light.
  • Works with GTK3, GTK2, Gnome-Shell, etc.

Installation of Vince Theme in Linux

You can install Vince in a few minutes with commands specific to your distro type.

-- Fedora/RedHat distros --
$ yum install gtk-murrine-engine gtk2-engines

-- Ubuntu/Mint/Debian distros --
$ sudo apt-get install gtk2-engines-murrine gtk2-engines-pixbuf

-- ArchLinux --
$ pacman -S gtk-engine-murrine gtk-engines

Next, double-click to open the script files and select “run at the terminal” or run the command below.

Once the theme is installed you can set it using your preferred app e.g. Gnome Tweak tool.

Are you a fan of Material Design themes? They are, by specification, minimalist, but not everybody likes such themes. In fact, some Linux users prefer the default distro UI looks or themes with more realistic-looking cursors and icons.

Download the theme and tell me what you think about it in the comments section below.
