Papirus Icon Theme Has Ended Its PPA and Provides an Installation Script Instead

Papirus Icon Theme is one of my favorite theme packs for Linux not just because of its modern look and feel but also because of its wide range of app icons that are added to it during every update.

Not to long after receiving a major update it was announced that the team behind the awesome icon theme has decided to stop supporting its PPA – meaning that users will not be able to receive automatic updates from their software center.

Despite the bad news, the silver lining is that Papirus itself isn’t being discontinued and users are still able to install it, however, manually, via the distro-independent installation script that its developers have made freely available.

The downside to the script is that updates are manual and users will have to run the script every now and then to check for and install any existing updates which always contain bug fixes and new app icons. Presently, Papirus icon theme includes.

Papirus Icon Theme Installation

Installing the theme is pretty straight forward. Just run the following command in a new Terminal window:

$ sudo wget -O - | bash

The command will download and automatically run ‘’, a script which will grab the latest version of the theme from its master branch on GitHub and extract it into the relevant location on your desktop.

The script relies on p7-zip and will throw an error message when it tries to run if you do not have installed. But that shouldn’t be a problem – use the command below to install p7-zip and then use the Unity Tweak Tool to apply the theme when it is ready.

$ sudo apt install p7zip-full

Papirus is so cool that it can theme hardcoded tray icons.

What do you think is the reason behind the decision to end its PPA support? Please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below.
